What is cerebral palsy

What is cerebral palsy? Many studies have tried to explain what cerebral palsy is. It is important to know that the cerebral palsy is at many times caused by lack of oxygen to the brain during pregnancy or at birth.

There are many other causes of cerebral palsy but I will confine myself to this lack of oxygen theory because it was the cause of the condition for my daughter. The condition does not get worse if properly managed. It should be noted that it is not curable and the child with cerebral palsy will live with the condition for the rest of her or his life.

Once cerebral palsy has been confirmed for your child, it is better to have further examinations and to determine what follow up action to take. The extent of the damage or condition of your child will vary depending on the severity of the damage to the brain. Therefore the management of your child will depend on the severity of this damage.

While at it and since the condition is permanent, it is good to make the best of the child’s life by involving her or him in day to day activities. One suitable activity for our child is physical therapy, so we engage a physiotherapist to work with her and sometimes we do some exercises at home. We are fortune in that our daughter does not require the use of medicine on regular basis unless she fells sick.

Ensure that the child attends regular physiotherapy or you do some physical exercise with her or him. Also see how the child can attend school at a special school or better still in the “normal” school, depending on the severity of the condition.
