Modern Devices

Modern Devices can improve the lives of persons with disabilities, especially those with cerebral palsy. Cerebral Palsy is a condition which is normally detected after birth.

One of the causes of cerebral palsy is lack of oxygen during or just after birth as was the case with our daughter. The condition is not infectious and it is not curable. If properly managed, the condition does not worsen.

There are several devices which can help a person with cerebral palsy. These devices include wheel chairs, callipers, clutches and other devices for mobility. Other devices in the area of education can be the use of computers for learning.

In order to promote local modern equipment, I will talk about the Appropriate Paper Technology (APTERS) in Zambia. APTERS was established by some physically challenged Zambians.

One of the key aims of APTERS is to promote mobility aids using technology for children with disabilities for instance children with cerebral palsy and other birth injuries. The mobility aids include standing frames, chairs, wedges, walkers and special chairs with trays.

The main raw material for the equipment is used paper which is recycled. Collection of paper from business houses and other places is done by volunteers. The volunteers include schools, embassies and business organisations.

As a family we have bought special desks and standing frames from APTERS. The special chair

We bought two special desks from APTERS. One special desk is for use by Christabel at home and the other desk is used at school when she is doing some school work. This desk helps Christabel to sit upright and to do school work at ease. The conventional desk provided by the school is not suitable for her.

We also use a stand frame which we bought from APTERS. The standing frame helps strengthen the bones and to stabilise the hip joints.
