Maternal Health

Maternal Health is very important when dealing with cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy is the last thing any parent expects a child to have as this condition affects the normal growth of the baby. Children with cerebral palsy are affected mainly with motor development most of them are not able to walk properly or not walk at all.

A child with cerebral palsy needs love, care and support from both parents, right from the time the child is diagnosed with the condition. This leads to other siblings and indeed other members of the family and other relatives and friends to develop a positive attitude towards the child. In addition, the issue of blaming either partner is minimal or nil when both partners share the responsibility of taking care of the child.

Issues of health and cerebral palsy are closely related, especially that the health condition of a woman may determine the possibility of child getting cerebral palsy.Good maternal health and care during pregnancy, and proper management of labour and delivery is cardinal in preventing cerebral palsy.

To prevent cerebral palsy, identification and early treatment of conditions that puts the mother at risk is important. Flu can be a problem to pregnant woman and it should be treated and managed as quickly as possible.

A pregnant woman should be screened for syphilis and haemoglobin should be checked to ensure that the woman is healthy. A pregnant woman should not be exposed to harmful toxins such as mercury because toxins can increase the risks for cerebral palsy.During labour, delivery, any situation that can cause damage to the brain like delay of the second stage of labour should be managed well.

During delivery, sometimes there is a danger of poisoning if a woman discharges her bowels. To avoid this poisoning, a woman may take an enema. An enema is a medicine which is used to clean out bowels. This is taken just before the beginning of labour. It is recommended that you check with a doctor before using the enema. So it goes without saying that a pregnant woman should have regular medical check ups and she should be in good health for the duration of the pregnancy. Good personal hygiene should be of paramount importance for a woman who is pregnancy.
