Home schooling and Disability

This article is about home schooling and disability. We have felt that our child suffers from a handicap that seriously hampers her ability to stick to a routine, and we have realized that for some activities the best place to do them is at home. The child is constantly under our supervision. She gains a lot of quality education, in spite of her impairment.

Goal setting is an important part of educating a child with impairment. We set the number of working hours per week for the Christabel. A child with a disabilities just like any other child may have her bad days and this happens quite often with Christabel. We structure the learning hours according to the needs and interests of our child. Sometimes we use a computer. This way, she will have all the necessary information right at her fingertips while staying within the confines of her home. However, she is unable to use the conventional computer so we normally get the information she wants to use from the computer on her behalf. We intend to get her a special computer which she can use. We have also realized that special computers are very expensive and may be out of reach for us. A friend with Cerebral Palsy recommended to us to buy Mytobii P10.

Field trips and other educational activities are just as important. We allow our daughter to participate in filed trips and other extra curricular activities organized by her school. As a family we also visit places of interest and we let her interact with other children. We take your child out for some activities such as birth day parties and variety shows, so that she can socialize. We also let her set her own pace with making friends. This helps in strengthening her self-esteem.

Moreover, we remember that home schooling is just the same for every child, even when our child suffers from a disability. We just need to look for the right opportunities and the easiest alternatives to achieve the same goals.

This concept does not refer to the practice of sitting in front of the books and learning the printed matter. Field trips, watching documentaries, visiting factories and libraries also make up an important slice of the home schooling process. It makes sense to intersperse these activities so that learning becomes fun. You may want to finish off the few hours of textbook learning in the morning and dedicate the afternoons to these kinds of activities.
