Home Schooling and Disability

There are several issues relating to home schooling and disability. We have felt that our child suffers from a handicap that seriously hampers her ability to stick to a routine, and we have realized that for some activities the best place to do them is at home. The child is constantly under our supervision. She gains a lot of quality education, in spite of her impairment.

Goal setting is an important part of educating a child with impairment. We set the number of working hours per week for the Christabel. A child with a disabilities just like any other child may have her bad days and this happens quite often with Christabel. We prepare the schedule to suit the interest of the child.

This way, she will have all the information with the advantage of staying at home. The advantages include, we avoid heavy traffic and congestion to and from school and we also avoid working up very early in the morning.

During computer lessons she uses a conventional computer. The key board is adjusted to suit her needs We intend to get her a special computer which she can use. We have also realized that special computers are very expensive and may be out of reach for us. A friend with Cerebral Palsy recommended to us to buy Mytobii P10.

Field trips and other educational activities are just as important. We allow our daughter to participate in filed trips and other extra curricular activities organized by her school. As a family we also visit places of interest and we let her interact with other children. We take your child out for some activities such as birth day parties and variety shows, so that she can socialize. We also let her set her own pace with making friends. This helps in strengthening her self-esteem.

Moreover, we remember that principle of schooling at home should be the same for every child, even when our child suffers from a disability. We aim to achieve our goal and our goal is independent living for our child with disabilities.
