Disability Types

There are several Disability Types given as follows:

Mobility Impairments

• This group of disability includes the following:

• Upper limb(s) disability

• Lower limb(s) disability

• Manual dexterity

• Disability in coordination with different organs of the body

Spinal Cord Disability

Spinal cord injuries can lead to lifelong disabilities. This may happen due to accidents. This may be either complete or incomplete. In an incomplete injury, the message conveyed by the spinal cord is not completely lost whereas a complete injury results in a total disfunctioning of the sensory organs. In some case spinal cord disability can be a birth defect but it is very rare.

Brain Disability

Brain Disability occurs due to injury to the brain. This can be mild, moderate and severe and there are two types namely acquired and traumatic injuries. The acquired brain injury is due to external forces while the traumatic brain injury is a result of emotional disorders and behavioural disturbance.

Vision Disability

Vision disability is in various forms from minor to serious impairments. These impairments from injuries or from eye diseases. Some of the common vision impairment are scratched cornea, scratches on the sclera, diabetes related eye conditions, dry eyes and corneal graft.

Hearing Disability

This group includes people who are partially or completely deaf. People who partially deaf can use hearing aids to assist their hearing. Hearing disability can be at birth or occur later in life. The causes of deafness are many and include diseases and external injury to the eardrum.

Cognitive Disability

Cognition means thinking. It includes many different functions such as ability to pay attention, learn and retain information, solve problems and use of language. Cognitive disability is a brain based type of learning disability that impairs ability to read, write and speak. Learning problems, is different from someone with serious mental impairment...

One may suffer from one or two disability type and it can lower someone’s self confidence. However, one can gain control of his or her life through the use of assistive equipment.
