Disability Services

Disability Services is provision of facilities and access to public infrastructure for persons with disabilities. This can either private or public. My interest is in the matter of provision of accessibility and mobility for persons with disabilities.

Accessibility

This has to do with infrastructure which is provided in the home and in public places. For the home. The family would endeavour to provide accessibility of the person with disabilities to important places such as the kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and playroom or out door facilities.

In my country, the challenge for accessibility is when it comes to public places, like government buildings, churches, museums and other places. This is big challenge because for a person with a wheel chair the places are not accessible because there are no ramps or provision for use of a wheel. However, with increased awareness of the needs of persons with disabilities, the public places are becoming more user friendly especially the new shopping mores.

Mobility

The aspect of mobility has to do the kind of equipment available for persons with physical disabilities. The equipment include, wheel chairs, walkers, braces, clutches and other equipment. These are not readily available because a lot of persons with disabilities are poor and they are unable to use them. Many persons with physical disabilities rely on donations from well wishers.

Another aspect of mobility is access to public transport. Public transport in my country is not adapted for persons with disabilities. To get into a public bus, it is at owner’s risk, one has to struggle to get into an ordinary public bus.

Our daughter goes to school or other places using an ordinary saloon car. To get her into the car is quite a challenge because of the rigidness of the body. At some future stage, the dfamily has to find a suitable vehicle for use by our daughter with disabilities.

After reading disability services go to disability training.
