Disability and my daughter

Cerebral Palsy is a disability which affect many people. I am familiar with this condition because my daughter has got this disability.

This condition is a group of disorders involving movement, learning, seeing and thinking that occur due to problems with brain development. It is caused by injuries to the brain. The injuries may occur when the baby is in the womb or it can happen during the first two years of life, while the brain is still developing.

It is a non progressive disorder, that is the brain damage does not get worse, but secondary physical difficulties may occur. There is no treatment for this condition.

The goal of treatment is to help the child to be as independent as possible. Treatment requires a team approach including a primary care doctor, a social worker, nurses, occupational, physical and speech therapists and other specialists.

For self and home care, it is recommended that there is enough food and good nutrition and keeping the home safe. The child should be assisted to perform exercises as recommended by the physiotherapist.
