Cerebral Palsy Types

Cerebral palsy types are four. The classification is based on the area of brain damage. The four cerebral types are given below:

Spastic cerebral palsy-Muscle tightness

Athetoid or Dyskinetic Cerebral Palsy- Poor coordination

Ataxic Cerebral Palsy- Poor coordination and low muscle tone

Mixed Cerebral Palsy- combination all three

Our daughter has a combination of the three conditions but it is difficult to determine the extent of the problem. However, I can safely say that she is moderately affected. She is able to use the lower and upper limbs and she is also able to move around in the home on her kneels. However, she is an unable to walk. However, the coordination of the limbs is quite poor, especially when she wants to pick something, it is quite an effort and she takes a lot of time.

The causes of cerebral palsy are many and one of the main causes is lack of oxygen to the brain for a baby during pregnancy or at birth. It is a condition and not a disease and is not infectious.

Some of the risk factors are premature birth and underweight babies. To prevent cerebral palsy one has to attend regular medical checks during pregnancy although this is not a guarantee but at least it minimise the chances of the occurrence of cerebral palsy.

Regardless of the type of cerebral palsy a person has, the care givers should have patience and compassion to look after the person with cerebral palsy. When my daughter goes for a birth, it is a ceremony because it take quite a lot of time. She will take about 30 to 40 minutes for a birth which normally would last about 10 minutes.

So when you are planning to go out with her, we give some time allowance to finish off are chores because she takes quite a bit of time and you have to get used to it.
