cerebral palsy treatment

Cerebral palsy treatment include several methods such as exercise and swimming. Details of the treatment are given below:

1. Exercise

Exercise can be a great benefit for people with cerebral palsy. These exercises need to be tailored for each person, as everyone has their limitations. Ask your doctor or therapist for his advice before starting any exercise programme. Exercise is key to any therapy one may take. It enables a person to keep fit2. Chiropractic

Chiropractic is alternative medicine operates on the rationale that the impairments are caused through the nervous system. This treatment prevents some mechanical disabilities in the body. I will not go into the debate of chiropractic as an alternative medicine. Some people with cerebral palsy have found great success with chiropractors. Make sure you research and find a chiropractor that has experience with cerebral palsy.

3. Electrical Stimulation

Another thing that helps people with cerebral palsy is Therapeutic Electrical Stimulation (TES). This is done at night while the patient sleeps. TES has been proven to add more muscle fibre, and along with exercise and therapy, it helps the patient have better use of his muscles.

4. Swimming

Swimming has helped lots of people with cerebral palsy. Warm water especially helps stiff muscles to relax. Performing swimming motions also increases muscle tone and strength.

Other treatments include Feldenkrais method and adaptive equipment. The Feldenkrais method is aimed at retraining of the body and mind. It uses the combination of physical therapy, psychology and martial arts to retrain the mind and develop movements and physical growth. The adaptive equipment include such items as, wheel cahirs, walkers, leg braces, communication aids and special utensils.

Special utensils is also available for children with cerebral palsy. The girl in the picture is using a special utensil. The handle for thespoon is bigger than the normal spoon for ease of use by the child with cerebal palsy. These children have problems of grasping items especially small items.
