Cerebral palsy surgery

Cerebral palsy surgery - In some cases, a person may require an operation. Once the surgery has been successfully carried out it may improve the well being of the child with cerebral palsy. Some of the surgeries are given below :

1. Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy

One of the treatments for cerebral palsy is Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR). SDR is a surgical operation which may lessen spasticity in a person with cerebral palsy.

2. Tenotomony

Tenotomy is an operation of cutting an affected muscle.

3. Botox

Botox A injections are types of surgeries given to a person with cerebral palsy. These injections can be effective in calming overactive muscles. These injections especially help with muscles in the upper body, arms, legs, and “tiptoe walking,” which is common with and leg spasticity.

4. Heel Cord

A lot of times, children with cerebral palsy walk on their toes. This is because of tight heel cords. Surgery can help correct it by lengthening the tendon. It can also help the person with cerebral palsy to better learn to walk, and to improve balance. In our case, we have not required any surgery. The only thing which was identified by the orthopedic specialist was calipers.

The orthopedic specialist made some calipers for use by our daughter and we used them for a while and we abandoned them. She was not comfortable to use the calipers.

Personally, I do not recommend surgery unless it is necessary. It may also be expensive. Personally, I have a phobia for surgery and surgery to me, means cutting up certain parts of the body and that scares me a lot. I will be reluctant to recommend any one for surgery especially my daughter who is delicate to me.
