Cerebral Palsy Occupational Therapy
Cerebral Palsy Occupational therapy is focused on the talents of the person with disabilities and the idea is to optimise on his/her potential so that she/he lives a meaningful life. It is the duty of the therapist to identify these talents and to exploit them to the full. These skills can be things like eating, bathing, playing and other daily living tasks. Cerebral palsy occupational therapy enables individuals to take part in day to day activities. For occupational therapy to succeed, the family should be fully involved. Parents, brothers and sisters should help the person with cerebral palsy to learn life skills. To learn about occupational therapy a family has to engage an occupational therapist. This therapist would make an assessment on the child to identify abilities and limitations, environmental conditions that affect participation in daily life. The family should identify one key family member to be the contact person. This contact person should preferably be one of the parents or both. In our case, I am the key person but I get a lot of support from my wife. We have identified use of computer has the main skill which our daughter should learn. She has already started the lessons and progress is good. After she has done the basics in computers we would like to pick on some activity or activities which would be of interest to her. The higher skill or higher level of training will be for business. We would like to encourage her to go into simple designing for cards such as wedding, greetings, birthday and other special occasion. Besides the occupation therapy, physical therapy or exercises will still be carried out on regular basis. The physical therapy helps the child with cerebral palsy to improve on her coordination and control of her body.
