Cerebral palsy in the classroom is an interesting subject. Students with cerebral palsy are required to learn many subjects according the needs of the student but bearing in mind the school syllabus. Hand writing can be a challenge because of many reasons. In the first place, the posture can be a problem. You have to put the student with cerebral palsy upright and it is not easy because the stiffness of the body. In our case, we have made a special chair which she uses in the classroom. Other challenges include perceptual abilities and pencil or pen pressure. Perceptual abilities can vary from one person to another depending on the severity of the condition. Pen or pencil pressure, for a person with cerebral palsy can be a challenge. If using a pencil, you find that it is constantly breaking because of too much pressure exerted on it so you will keep on sharpening the pencil. If it is a pen, depending on the quality and if it is poor quality, it can break. So writing is a big challenge to persons with cerebral palsy and may require longer and require more effort by the student with cerebral palsy Our daughter the biggest challenge is hand writing and she struggles to write and she gets frustrated. When is using a pencil during a test or an examination, when she knows the answer to a question she gets excited and in the processing of writing the answer she would break the pencil. This happens many times. Thank you to the assistive technology, she is now able to write using a computer and this has brought relief and happiness to our daughter. However, she is still quite slow on the computer. If you do not appreciate the problems of cerebral palsy, you may think that she is deliberately slow yet she has problems of coordination of her actions. Also, speech impairments may be seen in children with cerebral palsy. The school should use speech therapist to help the students with speech problems so that they are fully integrated in the school. Our daughter is able to communicate with others in class and this helps in social interaction and integration. When she gets back home, she able to tell some events which happened in class or at school and this makes us happy to note that there is social interaction at school.
