Cerebral Palsy Centre

I will set up a Cerebral Palsy Centre which will be known as “Special Education and Training Trust” (SETT). SETT will provide special education and training for children with disabilities. It will have a defined Vision, Mission Statement, goal and objectives.

Vision

The Vision of the Cerebral Palsy Centre or Trust is that children with disabilities in Zambia are able to determine their own destiny and they should have high quality education and skills training, gainful employment, food security, shelter and good health.

Mission

The Mission is that the Trust will design and deliver high quality education and skills training for persons with disabilities.

Goal

Children with disabilities enjoy equal opportunities that are available in society and necessary for living and development.Objectives

• To equip the disabled child with survival skills.

• To enhance mutual integration of disabled child in the society.

• To provide comprehensive and quality special education to disabled children.

• To provide forum for exchange of information on special education to parents. professionals and other interested persons and organisations.

• To enhance and facilitate inclusive education for children with disabilities.

• To provide social media services for children with disabilities (internet, ezines, e-books, books, cassettes, videos and Digital Versatile Disks-DVDs).

• To provide state of the art assistive equipment for children with disabilities.

• To provide high quality food and nutrition supplements.

1. Major Activities

SETT will provide the following:

• Individualised educational programmes (IEP). Individual and group teaching according to the disability.

• Behaviour Management Programmes (BMP). Management and modification of challenging behaviour.

• School Based Physiotherapy (SBP).

• School Based Basic Assessment and referral services.

• Counselling and consultation in special educational needs and inclusive education.

• Home Based Educational Outreach Programmes Supportive Services.

2. Expected Outputs

Having enrolled at the Trust, after a period of time children are expected:

• To achieve some levels of independent living and a sense personal of personal worth and growth.

• To be productive and contributing citizens in their own right and ability.

• To find and discover opportunities for friendship, social life and develop interpersonal skills and other interesting hobbies.

• To discover and develop skills for life and self employment.

• To have access to public facilities and amenities.

3. Major Markets

The major market for the cerbral palsy centre is Lusaka district. Lusaka has population of more than 2 million people. The target group will be children with disabilities. Selection criteria will be determined after a needs assessment study is done. The Trust will be day school although boarding will be considered at a later stage.

4. Major Business Suppliers

The major suppliers will be as follows:

• Food stores for food and food supplements.

• Pharmacies and drug stores for medicines and drugs.

• Bookstores for books.

• Sports stores for sports wear and equipment.

• Assistive equipment manufacturers.

• Filling Stations for fuel.

• Maintenance companies for buildings, vehicles and equipment.

5. Major Costumers

Pupils with disabilities from all walks of life. Pupils who will not manage to pay for the education/training will be paid for, through a Trust Fund

6. Major Competitors

The major competitors will be the government schools dealing with children with special needs, community schools and private schools. However as Andrew Carnegie, American Industrialist and Philanthropist said…”The surest foundation… is quality”. SETT will provide quality education and training for children with disabilities.

7. Branch Network and Associated Business

SETT will be a stand alone outfit based in Lusaka. Consideration to expand to other districts may be given in the future plans. The associated institutions of SETT will be:

• Clinics.

• Physiotherapy Centres.

• Other Schools.

• Food and nutrition Centres.

• Churches.

A Support Group will be formed with a constitution. The group will consist of the following:

• Ordinary members-Parents/Guardians with a child at school

• Teaching Staff.

• Honourary Members-By invitation.

• Associate members.

8. Requirements for the Trust

a. Infrastructure

On a one hectare plot which has been already secured the following will be constructed:

• Classroom block

• Offices

• Kitchen

• Toilets

• School Clinic

• Houses for Care Givers

• Toilets

b. Furniture and Equipment

• Office furniture

• School furniture-desks and chairs

• Computers

• Copiers/Fax machine

• Fridges

• Air condition equipment

• Carpets and mats

• Vehicles

• Personnel

c. Personnel

The Trust will take a multi-disciplinary approach. The personnel will consist of trained specialist teachers in the following field of special education: Learning disabilities, learning difficulties, psycho-social counsellors, speech therapists, counselling and guidance, special early childhood education and special vocation.

The teaching staff will range from certificate holders to degree holders. Other outside professional staff such as medical doctors and nurses, social workers and nutritionists will be co opted in as associates. Auxiliary staff will consist of trained child care staff, cleaners, and drivers.

The Trust will maintain a lean personnel structure and the key personnel will be the Chief Executive Officer, Operations Manager and teachers.

Financial resources for establishing the Cerebral Palsy Centre will be sourced from personal contributions (land-one hectare of land is already secured),well wishers,fund raising activties and funding agencies. Applications for funding will be made to various funding agencies.
