Cerebral Palsy Assistive Technology

Cerebral Palsy Assistive technology are devices for persons with disabilities. Assistive Technology (AT) is not restricted to persons with cerebral palsy, it is open to other disabilities. AT promotes greater independence by enabling people to perform tasks which were previous difficult to perform.

The cerebral palsy assistive technology includes hardware and software which helps people with specific disabilities maximize their abilities to access information and services.

This technology can help a person with disabilities to do the following:

• A computer can talk on behalf of a person who is unable to talk.

• A computer can recognize a voice and type some work for you.

• A person with disabilities can learn how to type.

The person with disabilities will be given an opportunity to learn different types of computer skills which will be tailored to their needs.

At our home we have the following software:

- Typing Master Software

- Text to Speech Software

- Voice recognition computer applications

- On – Screen Keyboard setting, Magnifier setting, Narrator setting, Mouse Keys Utilization and setting.

The objective is to see how the technology can be used by a person with disabilities to enable him or her lead a more purposive life with some skills to do work and at the same time too have time for relaxing and enjoying life.

The advantage of this assistive technology is that you can do it on one to one and you can do it in any room or outdoor. We use assistive technology in our home and the family is be involved in the training of one family member with disabilities. We can type things we want to do, want eat and want to discuss. Assistive technology has the potential to increase abilities of person with disabilities and can lead to independent living.

Assistive technology can improve and even change lives, yet many of people with disabilities do not have access to computers and do not have information and necessary support. A programme will be designed for an effective outreach to people with disabilities, letting them know about this innovation.

Another activity we want to embark on will be training of trainers so that many people can reach out to persons with disabilities. Some care givers for children with disabilities will be trained in using assistive technology and they will in turn start training children with disabilities.
